Linguistic discrimination in pedagogical evaluation. A study of teachers of Hungarian language and literature in Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania and Hungary

There is a paucity of research on dialect awareness among teachers, particularly in Hungary. The aim our was to explore, and demonstrate the existence linguistic discrimination. involved more than 550 Hungarian Language Literature teachers teacher trainees from Hungary (N = 216), Slovakia 128), Romania 108) Ukraine 50). Data were collected primarily through technique similar matched-guise tests, however, method present had some additional complexity. pilot test 50) large-scale 502) clearly supported assumption that discrimination widespread pedagogical evaluation. Oral performances recorded which varied content, language variety code/mode use. produced standard and/or elaborated code use favored. By contrast, oral productions dialectal restricted language—despite fact their content correct—received unfavorable Linguistic variability with same resulted as much full grade difference mean grades. differences statistically significant for each sample, hence prevalence proved.
